Representing Glaciations and Subglacial Processes in Hydrogeological Models: A Numerical Investigation [PDF]
The specific impact of glacial processes on groundwater flow and solute transport under ice-sheets was determined by means of numerical simulations. Groundwater flow and the transport of δ18O, TDS, and groundwater age were simulated in a generic sedimentary basin during a single glacial event followed by a postglacial period.

ABSTRACT The timing and spatial patterns of glaciers retreat in the Northern French Alps during the Lateglacial (19.0–11.7 ka) remain debated, reflecting discrepancies among available chronological data sets. The complex interactions between major glaciers, such as the Rhône and Arve glaciers to the north and the Isère glacier to the south, represent a

Is Vostok lake in steady state? [PDF]
Stable-isotope (D and 18O) data from the Vostok (East Antarctica) ice core are used to explore whether or not subglacial Vostok lake is in isotopic steady state. A simple box model shows that the lake is likely to be in steady state on time-scales of the

Experimental constraints on subglacial rock friction
Subglacial rock friction is an important control on the sliding dynamics and erosive potential of hard-bedded glaciers, yet it remains largely unconstrained.

The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Models of ice melting and edifice growth during subglacial basaltic eruptions. [PDF]
Models of the early stages of basaltic eruptions beneath temperate glaciers are presented that consider the evolving sizes of volcanic edifices emplaced within subglacial cavities.

Owing to the high level of absorption of very high frequency radio waves in water, previous investigators of airborne radio echo sounding (RES) data from Antarctica have assumed that the depth of subglacial lakes cannot be measured directly by this ...

The distribution of basal motion beneath a High Arctic polythermal glacier [PDF]
The longitudinal pattern of surface velocity of a large, predominantly colds polythermal glacier (John Evans Glacier, Ellesmere Island, Canada) was measured over summer and winter periods.

Characterization of glacial silt and clay using automated mineralogy
Glacial erosion produces vast quantities of fine-grained sediment that has a far-reaching impact on Earth surface processes. To gain a better understanding of the production of glacial silt and clay, we use automated mineralogy to quantify the ...

Inferring forms of glacier slip laws from estimates of ice-bed separation during glacier slip
Sea-level projections depend sensitively on the parameterization used for basal slip in glacier flow models. During slip over rock-beds, ice-bed separation increases with slip velocity and basal water pressure.
