Abstract We show that the universal Teichmüller family V(g,n)$V(g,n)$ of compact Riemann surfaces of genus g⩾0$g\geqslant 0$ with n>0$n>0$ punctures is a Stein manifold. We apply the coarea formula to obtain integrability of superharmonic functions and nonintegrability of subharmonic functions. The results involve the Green function.
