New World vultures are the only avian clade proposed to lack a syrinx and have been described as non‐vocal. Using dissection, diceCT, and histology, we demonstrate that cathartid vultures have novel syringeal features that form a syrinx and vocal characterization reveals that they produce more complex vocalizations than previously reported.

In harmony, intervals like the octave (2:1) and fifth (3:2) predict consonance and ease of encoding. In rhythm, patterns with simple ratios (e.g., 2:1, 3:2) are easier to perceive, reproduce, and remember.
