DURING the summer of 1929 measurements were made on interference voltages received on a submarine cable in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The interference voltages were impressed on a vacuum tube amplifier capable of a power amplification of the order of 1015.

Abstract In the 1960s, it took a wild-eyed optimist like Alec Reeves to see a future for fiber optics in one of the toughest jobs for any cable—crossing the ocean depths to link continents. Yet by the mid-1970s, optical fibers were the last hope of salvaging an aging submarine cable industry besieged by rapid advances in satellite ...

The Loaded Submarine Telegraph Cable
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1925Witht an increase of traffic carrying capacity of 300 per cent over that of corresponding cables of the previous art, the New York-Azores permalloy-loaded cable marks a revolution in submarine cable practise. This cable represents the first practical application of inductive loading to transoceanic cables.

Picture Transmission by Submarine Cable
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1941The direct transmission of pictorial matter over transatlantic submarine cable has become practical through the development of some special types of networks and amplifiers. These are required because of the rapid increase of the circuit attenuation with frequency, and in order to override certain characteristic electrical interference to which the ...

Power Cables and Submarine Power Cables
Engineering & Technology Reference, 2015Power cables have been in use in underground and submarine transmission for over a hundred years. With the increased interconnection between lands and integration with power generation from offshore renewable energy, the demand for submarine power cables is getting stronger.

Cable Design for Optical Submarine Systems
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1984Transoceanic communication systems using coaxial cables with repeaters have been in use since the 1950's and there is now a very extensive international network. All major manufacturers of such systems are now developing optical cables and repeaters which will provide increased capacity at lower cost.

Since shortly after the first submarine telegraph cable installations in the early 1800's, underwater power cables have been implanted and used. Initial acceptance and use of such cables was slow, however, and only accellerated in the past half-century with the replacement of natural rubber insulations.

In duplexing practice a balanced "bridge" is formed by an arrangement of two ratio arms and an artificial cable. By the use of a device known as the Adjustment Restorer impedance may be introduced into the bridge circuit by means of which the balance can be restored at any frequency, and the balance errors at the different frequencies determined.
