In May, 1957, a brief survey of the Congo Submarine Canyon was conducted from the Research Vessel VEMA. The canyon was found on the continental slope near the seaward limit of earlier surveys and traced to the west for 150 miles. Where the survey was discontinued, in depths of 2,200 fathoms, the leveed canyon was still a prominent feature.

"Internal Waves" Advancing along Submarine Canyons
Science, 1974Patterns of alternating up- and downcanyon currents have been traced along the axes of submarine canyons off California. The patterns arrive later at stations nearer the heads of coastal canyons. Where a canyon heads between two islands, the patterns advance down the axis.

Many of these canyons start almost at the shore‐line and in some cases they are traceable outward to depths of over 11,000 feet.
