XGBoost Meets INLA: A Two‐Stage Spatio‐Temporal Forecasting of Wildfires in Portugal

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Wildfires pose a major threat to Portugal, with over 115,000 hectares burned annually on average during 1980–2024, and the country has faced devastating mega‐fires such as those in 2017. Accurate forecasts of wildfire occurrence and burned area are therefore essential for firefighting resource allocation and emergency preparedness.

Potential failure mechanism of low–angle submarine landslides in shelf–slope break of Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology
Low–angle submarine landslides pose a greater threat to offshore infrastructure compared to those with steep sliding angles. Understanding the preparation and triggering mechanism of these low–angle submarine landslides remains a significant challenge ...

Giant submarine landslide triggered by Paleocene mantle plume activity in the North Atlantic

open access: yes, 2018
The 290-km-long ‘Halibut Slide’ is the world’s largest epicontinental submarine landslide. Between 64 and 62 Ma, plume-related uplift in the North Atlantic and far-field stresses caused reactivation of major intra-plate faults.

Spatio‐Temporal Modelling of Extreme Induced Seismicity in the Presence of An Evolving Measurement Network

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Earthquakes induced by injecting or extracting gas from underground reservoirs can pose a significant hazard to surrounding infrastructure and populations. Safeguarding against future seismic hazards requires accurate models for the upper tail of the earthquake magnitude distribution that are able to represent various intervention strategies ...

Bathymetric terrain model of the Atlantic margin for marine geological investigations. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Bathymetric terrain models of seafloor morphology are an important component of marine geological investigations. Advances in acquisition and processing technologies of bathymetric data have facilitated the creation of high-resolution bathymetric ...

Nationwide 8m Hydrologically Conditioned Digital Elevation and Hydraulic Roughness Maps for Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 13, Issue 2, April 2026.
We introduce an 8m Aotearoa New Zealand wide hydrologically conditioned DEMs and roughness generated in April 2025, which is publicly available on ZENODO European Union Open Research Repository (https://zenodo.org/records/16734446) with the DOI 10.5281/zenodo.16734446. This dataset is ideal for flood modelling and other topologically driven analyses in

Numerical Modeling of Tsunamis Generated by Subaerial, Partially Submerged, and Submarine Landslides

open access: yesGeoHazards
Using the existing two-dimensional experimental data and Open-source Fields Operation and Manipulation (OpenFOAM) software, this study performs a comprehensive comparative analysis of three types of landslide-generated tsunamis (subaerial, partially ...

Configurational Energy as a Microstructural Descriptor of Failure Precursors in 2D Frictional Granular Materials

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Volume 50, Issue 5, Page 2470-2485, 10 April 2026.
ABSTRACT Localized deformation in dense granular materials, often culminating in the formation of shear bands, is a key failure mechanism in geotechnical and material systems. However, predicting the onset of such localization remains a fundamental challenge due to the system's inherent inelasticity and microstructural complexity.

Marine geodesy a multipurpose approach to solve oceanic problems [PDF]

open access: yes
Various current and future problem areas of marine geodesy are identified. These oceanic problem areas are highly diversified and include submersible navigation under ice seas, demarcation and determination of boundaries in deep ocean, tsunamis, ecology,

Landslide Activity in the European Alps ‐ Part 1: A Machine Learning Based Instrumental Catalog From the Analysis of Seismological Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Landslides in the European Alps are a growing concern in the context of climate change. However, landslide catalogs for the European Alps remain incomplete, often lacking precise timing and containing few, if any, entries for remote areas.
