Seasonal effects of waterfowl grazing on submerged macrophytes: The role of flowers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Seasonal effects of waterfowl (Fulica atra and Anas platyrhynchos) grazing on submerged macrophytes (Ruppia cirrhosa and Potamogeton pectinatus) and the mediating role of flowers on plant consumption were evaluated by exclusion cages and tethering ...

Juvenile and Adult Three‐Spined Sticklebacks Exhibit Different Habitat Use in Shallow Baltic Sea Bays

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Three‐spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) have become dominant in many Baltic Sea coastal fish assemblages, yet life‐stage‐specific habitat use remains poorly understood. We surveyed shallow water habitats along the coast of Gotland, Sweden, to examine how juvenile and adult stickleback abundances relate to variables such as submersed

Development and Research Progress of the ‘Land‐Based Container + Ecological Pond’ Recirculating Aquaculture Model in China

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
This review systematically examines China's Land‐based Container + Ecological Pond (LCEP) recirculating aquaculture model. It synthesizes the system's development, technical principles, and research progress, highlighting its significant resource savings (>75% land, >90% water) and high‐density production capabilities. The analysis critically evaluates

The effect of periphyton on the light environment and production of Potamogeton perfoliatus L. in the mesotrophic basin of Lake Balaton [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Light within the littoral zone affects the productivity and interaction between periphyton and its macrophyte substrate. The effect of periphyton on macrophyte photosynthesis, seasonal variation and vertical distribution of periphyton on artificial ...

Species‐Specific Response of Fish Health Condition to Nutrient Enrichment in Subtropical Rivers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Fish condition factor (K) can be used to evaluate the effects of eutrophication. Species‐specific responses of fish K to nutrient enrichment were detected. Nutrient enrichment significantly enhanced the K value of zooplanktivorous fish, while it did not affect the K value of omnivorous fish.

Unveiling Zooplankton Diversity Patterns: The Differential Influence of Macrophyte Belts on Species and Functional Metrics

open access: yesDiversity
Species and functional diversity are essential frameworks for analyzing changes in planktonic communities. In lakes and rivers, macrophytes within the coastal zone are a primary determinant of zooplankton community structure and function.

Eurasian watermilfoil biomass associated with insect herbivores in New York [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
A study of aquatic plant biomass within Cayuga Lake, New York spans twelve years from 1987-1998. The exotic Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) decreased in the northwest end of the lake from 55% of the total biomass in 1987 to 0.4 ...

Environmental drivers of aquatic macrophyte communities in southern tropical African rivers:Zambia as a case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The first-ever extensive macrophyte survey of Zambian rivers and associated floodplain waterbodies, conducted during 2006–2012, collected 271 samples from 228 sites, mainly located in five freshwater ecoregions of the world primarily represented in ...

Comprehensive effects of lake dredging on microbial community and dissolved organic matter compositions in surface sediments

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Sediment dredging and submerged macrophyte restoration are effective ways to improve water quality, especially in eutrophic shallow lakes. However, the impact of dredging on the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial ...
