Submesoscale Dynamics in Tropical Instability Waves

open access: yesOcean Modelling, 2011
Submesoscale dynamics in tropical instability waves (TIWs) of the Pacific ocean are analyzed from nested numerical simulations of increasing resolution (36 km, 12 km, and 4 km).

The Impact of Submesoscale Physics on Primary Productivity of Plankton

Annual Review of Marine Science, 2016
Life in the ocean relies on the photosynthetic production of phytoplankton, which is influenced by the availability of light and nutrients that are modulated by a host of physical processes. Submesoscale processes are particularly relevant to phytoplankton productivity because the timescales on which they act are similar to those of phytoplankton ...

Submesoscale processes in the Baltic Sea

2023

Meso- to Submesoscale Turbulence in the Ocean

2023
The energy cycle in ocean models is still biased due to the large uncertainty regarding how processes in the mesoscale and submesoscale regimes are represented. Since mesoscale turbulence is largely geostrophic, it features an energy transfer towards larger scales.

Submesoscale dynamics in the coastal ocean

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017
High-resolution observations reveal the fast dynamics of submesoscale eddies in the coastal ocean. The eddies seem to play an important role in the ocean energy cascade and are thought to be important drivers for phytoplankton production. The eddies are frequently observed in the coastal and open ocean and are characterized by sharp gradients of 1°C/m ...

The Propagation of Submesoscale Coherent Vortices

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1995
Abstract A combined analytical and numerical examination of submesoscale coherent vortex (SCV) dynamics and propagation is conducted. This study is prompted by observations of the movement relative to their surroundings of one class of SCVs, that is, Meddies. An asymptotic analysis is performed to study the mechanics governing SCV propagation.

Submesoscale, coherent vortices in the ocean

Reviews of Geophysics, 1985
A variety of observations of intense, long‐lived oceanic vortices are interpreted as examples of a distinct phenomenon, which is given the name Submesoscale, Coherent Vortices (SCV's). The distinguishing characteristics of SCV's are defined and illustrated by example, and a survey is made of the different SCV types presently known.

Frontal Maintenance in Submesoscale Flows

Journal of Physical Oceanography
Abstract Classic deformation theory includes parameters—divergence, total strain, and vorticity—that are invariant to changes in the coordinate system. However, these parameters are sometimes ambiguous with respect to characterizing how fronts are formed and maintained because the presence of a front imposes a reference coordinate system.

A Perspective on Submesoscale Geophysical Turbulence

2010
Define the submesoscale regime as the geophysical fluid dynamics that arise from advective processes and that have a marginal degree of dynamical control by planetary rotation and stable density stratification. The degrees are conventionally measured by a Rossby number, Ro=V/fL (V a horizontal speed, f the Coriolis frequency, L a horizontal length ...

The turbulent dynamics of anticyclonic submesoscale headland wakes

Journal of Physical Oceanography
Flow interacting with bathymetry has been posited to be important for dissipation and mixing in the global ocean. Despite this, there are large uncertainties regarding mixing in these environments, particularly as it pertains to the role of submesoscale structures in the dynamics and energetics.
