Submesoscale Instability in the Straits of Florida [PDF]
AbstractThe Florida Current (FC) flows in the Straits of Florida (SoF) and connects the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf Stream (GS) in the Western Atlantic Ocean. Its journey through the SoF is at time characterized by the formation and presence of mesoscale but mostly submesoscale frontal eddies on the cyclonic side of the current.

Topological Feature Tracking for Submesoscale Eddies
Current state-of-the art procedures for studying modeled submesoscale oceanographic features have made a strong assumption of independence between features identified at different times. Therefore, all submesoscale eddies identified in a time series were

On Rates of Isopycnal Dispersion at the Submesoscale
AbstractPast studies of dispersion with float‐pairs have indicated that they may remain close together for much longer when they equilibrate on the same isopycnal, presumably due to the reduced influence of vertical shear. To examine this question more closely, we use a set of 13 and 15 float pair combinations that equilibrated within 0.1 °C (∼σθ = 0 ...

Submesoscale dynamics accompanying the Kuroshio in the East China Sea
Submesoscale processes in the ocean are vital for sustaining energy balance across scales. Taking advantage of the high resolution and wide coverage of numerical simulations, which are currently lacking for field observations, we investigated the basic ...

Submesoscale flows impact Agulhas leakage in ocean simulations [PDF]
Agulhas leakage, the warm and salty inflow of Indian Ocean water into the Atlantic Ocean, is of importance for the climate-relevant Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

Topographic influence on submesoscale dynamics in the Southern Ocean [PDF]
Topography influences the circulation in the Southern Ocean, generating stationary meanders in the lee of topographic features, triggering hot spots of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy, and modifying jets and fronts.

On the evolution & equilibration of submesoscale fronts
Submesoscale fronts with large horizontal density gradients and O(1) Rossby numbers are common in the upper ocean. These fronts are associated with large vertical transport and are hotspots for biological activity. Submesoscale fronts are susceptible to symmetric instability — a form of convective–inertial instability which occurs when the potential ...

Ocean dynamics at the submesoscale play a key role in mediating upper‐ocean energy dissipation and dispersion of tracers. Observations of ocean currents from synoptic mesoscale surveys at submesoscale resolution (250 m–100 km) from a novel airborne ...
