Topological Feature Tracking for Submesoscale Eddies
Current state-of-the art procedures for studying modeled submesoscale oceanographic features have made a strong assumption of independence between features identified at different times. Therefore, all submesoscale eddies identified in a time series were studied in aggregate.

Submesoscale Instabilities in Mesoscale Eddies [PDF]
AbstractSubmesoscale processes have been extensively studied in observations and simulations of fronts. Recent idealized simulations show that submesoscale instabilities also occur in baroclinic mesoscale cyclones and anticyclones. The instabilities in the anticyclone grow faster and at coarser grid resolution than in the cyclone.

Three-Dimensional Parameterization of Submesoscale Eddy From HiSea-II Imagery
The detection of submesoscale eddies is limited by altimeter resolution and the complex dynamics of eddy formation and dissipation, resulting in an incomplete understanding of their structure.

Submesoscale inverse energy cascade enhances Southern Ocean eddy heat transport
Oceanic eddy-induced meridional heat transport (EHT) is an important process in the Southern Ocean heat budget, the variability of which significantly modulates global meridional overturning circulation (MOC) and Antarctic sea-ice extent.

The Submesoscale Kinetic Energy Cascade: Mesoscale Absorption of Submesoscale Mixed Layer Eddies and Frontal Downscale Fluxes [PDF]
Abstract Mesoscale eddies can be strengthened by the absorption of submesoscale eddies resulting from mixed layer baroclinic instabilities. This is shown for mesoscale eddies in the Agulhas Current system by investigating the kinetic energy cascade with a spectral and a coarse-graining approach in two model simulations of the Agulhas ...

Evidence of submesoscale coastal eddies inside Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, México
Submesoscale eddies (1-10 km diameter) were identified using surface velocity observations obtained from a high-frequency radar system (HFR) operated in Todos Santos Bay (TSB), Baja California, Mexico.

Surface currents obtained from the high-frequency surface-wave radars (HFSWRs) installed along the coast of Fujian Province are utilized to characterize submesoscale eddies in the southwestern Taiwan Strait from 29 January to 26 March 2013. The algorithm

Submesoscale Eddies in the White Sea Based on Satellite Radar Measurements
This paper presents the results of the analysis of the archive of radar images of Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) and Radarsat-1,2 for the warm period of 2009–2012. For the first time surface manifestations of submesoscale eddies are mapped in the White Sea.The areas of persistent eddy activity as well as eddy characteristics are ...

Antisymmetry of oceanic eddies across the Kuroshio over a shelfbreak
From the analysis of oceanic eddies detected in the drifter trajectories of the Global Drifter Program (GDP) data set, it was found that oceanic eddies are asymmetrically distributed across the Kuroshio in the East China Sea: predominant cyclonic ...

SAR-Derived Surface Current of Submesoscale Ocean Eddies
A novel method is proposed to calculate the surface current fields of submesoscale eddies accurately. Using the C-Band Doppler (CDOP) model, we first invert preprocessed SAR images to get one-dimensional radial velocity (RVL).
