On the "Rawness" of Subsoils

Science, 1917
Subsoils of arid regions are certainly no less "raw" than those of semi-arid regions, and probably only slightly less so than those of humid regions. 2. If, as seems as yet unproved, inoculated legume seeds fail to develop on humid subsoil material, such failure can not justifiably be attributed as is done by Alway, McDole and Rost, to a lack

Studies of DBCP in subsoils

Science of The Total Environment, 1981
Abstract Studies of DBCP in subsoils at four locations in the San Joaquin Valley show that: 1) DBCP can be found in subsoils between the ground surface and the water table in parts per billion (of dry soil) amounts; 2) Clays and silts adsorb higher levels of DBCP and may not act as barriers to downward movement of DBCP; and 3) DBCP is persistent in ...

Subsoil compaction and ways to prevent it.

2003
Subsoil compaction affects all aspects of soil quality and, contrary to topsoil compaction, it is persistent. Natural alleviation processes such as wetting/drying, freezing/thawing and biological activity, including root growth, decrease rapidly with depth.

Opening up the subsoil: Subsoiling and bio-subsoilers to remediate subsoil compaction in three fodder crop rotations on a sandy loam soil

Soil and Tillage Research
Abstract: The intensification of modern arable farming has brought on a steady increase of the risk of soil compaction, while simultaneously pushing the impact deeper into the soil profile. In the subsoil, outside the reach of regular tillage operation, it can become exceedingly difficult to deal with compacted layers.
