Abstract Background Rhodococcus equi causes pneumonia in young foals, but disease susceptibility and severity vary. Cortisol and vitamin D modulate immune responses and cytokine production during bacterial infection, and altered concentrations are associated with sepsis in neonatal foals. We hypothesised an age and disease effect on circulating steroid

A Conceptual Framework and Methods for Studying the Connectivity of Fishes
ABSTRACT Connectivity is a multifaceted concept that has important implications for the management and conservation of marine and freshwater fishes. We developed a conceptual framework that encompasses multiple, interrelated categories of connectedness, including landscape (e.g., structural, functional) connectivity and ecological (e.g., trophic ...

Protein import into mitochondria relies on TIM complexes and the membrane potential. Trypanosoma brucei has a unique TIM complex, and the role of one subunit, TbTim20, has remained unclear. Here, we show that TbTim20 is essential in cells lacking mitochondrial DNA. The importance of TbTim20 increases as the membrane potential decreases.

Targeting the microbiota‐miRNA‐protease axis: A new therapeutic avenue in melanoma
Modulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover is central to melanoma progression and metastasis, driven largely by ECM proteases. This review highlights the epigenetic regulation of ECM proteases by microRNAs and their roles in melanoma growth, invasion, and immune modulation.
