Substation automation systems in review
IEEE Computer Applications in Power, 1998Screen-based substation automation projects are becoming increasingly common. Computerized substation automation systems have been installed for at least 5 years. In response to a number of issues, such as the safety of operational staff that operates a diverse range of equipment, operational efficiencies, and space savings, many electric utilities ...

Advanced networks for distributed measurement in substation automation systems
2013 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS), 2013The adoption of IEC 61850 in the deployment of Substation Automation System opens new scenarios to system design. The presence of a communication infrastructure connecting Intelligent Electronic Device (IED), sensors and protections may suggest the development of distribute measurement devices, where the sampling of the physical quantities and the ...

Co-simulation of network infrastructure for substation automation systems
2013 IEEE 18th Conference on Emerging Technologies & Factory Automation (ETFA), 2013Real-time networks for substations automation systems are based on ICT technologies and they may take great advantages from ultra recent network technological improvements. A careful evaluation of the performance enhancement is required. Due to cost and system complexity, such an analysis can be performed only using a dedicated simulation environment ...

Evaluation of Time Gateways for Synchronization of Substation Automation Systems
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2012The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 standard is widely used in substation automation system (SAS), even if some aspects related to the network-based time synchronization are still under investigation. The latest version of the IEC 61850 standard introduces IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) for distributing time in the ...

Automated design of substation switching systems
6th International Conference on Developments in Power Systems Protection, 1997The authors describe how it is possible to develop an automated design system for substation switching systems. Object-oriented design approaches, automated derivation of higher-level data from component specifications and layout, derivation of interlocking scheme, construction of generalized tasks and "divide and conquer" methods of accomplishing ...

Integrating recovery strategies into a primary substation automation system
2003 International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks, 2003. Proceedings., 2004The DepAuDE architecture provides middleware to integrate fault tolerance support into distributed embedded automation applications. It allows error recovery to be expressed in terms of recovery strategies, i.e., lightweight code fragments separated from the application code. At run time, the middleware orchestrates their execution.
