The electrodynamics of a substorm are analyzed using a crude one‐dimensional model. The discussion starts from the “standard interpretation“ scenario in which the plasma sheet collapses into a neutral sheet and magnetic merging occurs between the two tail lobes.

The tail plays a very active and important role in substorms. Magmetic flux eroded from the dayside magnetosphere is stored here. As more and more flux is transported to the magnetotail and stored, the boundary flares more, the field strength in the tail increases, and the currents strengthen and move closer to the earth.

Multiple substorm injections and the new substorm paradigm: Interpretation of the CDAW 7 substorm
Advances in Space Research, 1993Abstract In the near-Earth neutral line model, the substorm is triggered by reconnection in the magnetotail and its effects radiate from there. In recent years new observations have suggested a new paradigm for substorms in which there are two coupled acceleration regions.

Comparison of the Ionosphere During an SMC Initiating Substorm and an Isolated Substorm [PDF]
AbstractIn order to assess the effects of ionospheric feedback on different modes of energy transport in the magnetosphere, we investigate an isolated substorm and a steady magnetospheric convection (SMC) event with very similar solar wind drivers. The primary focus is on a comparison between the isolated substorm and the substorm that initiates the ...

A magnetospheric substorm is a transient process initiated on the night side of the earth, in which a significant amount of energy derived from the solar wind‐magnetosphere interaction is deposited in the auroral ionosphere and magnetosphere. Substorms are controlled by the interplanetary magnetic field, ceasing when it points northward for long ...

Qualitative similarities between some of the variations in the Mercury encounter data and variations in the corresponding regions of the earth's magnetosphere during substorms are pointed out. The Mariner 10 data on Mercury show a strong interaction between the solar wind and the plant similar to a scaled down version of that for the earth's ...
