Abstract The substrate-induced respiration inhibition (SIRIN) method of Anderson and Domsch for partitioning bacterial and fungal contributions to soil respiration was modified for application to dry soils. Effects of water amendment on basal and substrate-induced respiration rates of mineral soils

We studied the effects of amending soils with different volumes of water or glucose solution on respiration rates measured as CO2 evolution. Basal respiration was not significantly affected by the volume of water amendment, but substrate-induced respiration in static soil solutions was significantly reduced by increasing water contents.

Substrate‐Induced Respiration of a Sandy Soil Treated with Different Types of Organic Waste

A sandy soil was amended with different types of sewage sludge (digested, dried, and composted) and pig slurry. The composted sludges displayed higher organic‐matter stability (39–45%) than only digested sludge (26–39%) or digested + dried sludge (23–32%). The microbial biomass of the dried sludge was undetectable.
