Water distribution in laterals and units of subsurface drip irrigation. II: Field evaluation.

open access: yes, 2009
The performance of drip irrigation and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) laterals has been compared. Two emitter models (one compensating and the other noncompensating) were assessed.

Nitrogen Loss from Pristine Carbonate-Rock Aquifers of the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory (Germany) Is Primarily Driven by Chemolithoautotrophic Anammox Processes

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Despite the high relevance of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) for nitrogen loss from marine systems, its relative importance compared to denitrification has less been studied in freshwater ecosystems, and our knowledge is especially scarce for ...

An Ionic Limit to Life in the Deep Subsurface

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
The physical and chemical factors that can limit or prevent microbial growth in the deep subsurface are not well defined. Brines from an evaporite sequence were sampled in the Boulby Mine, United Kingdom between 800 and 1300 m depth.

Emitter discharge variability of subsurface drip irrigation in uniform soils: effect on water-application uniformity

open access: yes, 2008
Emitter discharge of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) decreases as a result of the overpressure in the soil water at the discharge orifice. In this paper, the variation in dripper discharge in SDI laterals is studied.

Habitability of Mars: How Welcoming Are the Surface and Subsurface to Life on the Red Planet?

open access: yesGeosciences, 2019
Mars is a planet of great interest in the search for signatures of past or present life beyond Earth. The years of research, and more advanced instrumentation, have yielded a lot of evidence which may be considered by the scientific community as proof of

Drawing the subsurface: an integrative design approach

open access: yes, 2017
The sub-surface, with its man-made and natural components, plays an important, if not crucial, role in the urban climate and global energy transition.

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.
