Challenges in Subtrochanteric Femur Fracture Management
Orthopedics, 2015Subtrochanteric femur fractures present significant treatment challenges. The deforming muscle forces make fracture reduction difficult. Treatment options include cephalomedullary nailing and various types of plate fixation. There is a high rate of treatment complications, including malunion, delayed union, nonunion, and implant failure.

Nonunion of Fractures of the Subtrochanteric Region of the Femur
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2004There are no large clinical series to guide the clinician treating a subtrochanteric nonunion. Deformity, bone loss from previous hardware, and the high stresses in the subtrochanteric region all pose challenges to achieving successful bony union with reoperation.

Subtrochanteric Fractures of the Femur
1987The subtrochanteric segment of the femur extends from the lesser trochanter to the junction of the proximal and middle thirds of the diaphysis. This segment of the femur is subjected not only to axial loads of weight bearing, but also to tremendous bending forces because of the eccentric load appli-cation to the femoral head (Fig. 12.1).

Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures in Children
2016Pediatric subtrochanteric femur fractures are a challenging subset of fractures to treat, with a relative paucity of literature-based evidence to support specific algorithmic approaches. These fractures are rare, and there is no clear consensus among authors on the definition of a subtrochanteric femur fracture in children. Patient age, weight, femoral
