On the interaction between the subtropical gyre and the Subtropical Cell on the shelf of the SE Atlantic

Journal of Marine Systems, 2008
Abstract The interaction of the subtropical gyre and the Subtropical Cell was studied with emphasis on the Benguela upwelling system by observations of sea surface height, surface wind vectors, and precipitation. Additionally, current profiles, drifter data, and hydrographic data completed the data set.

Cooling Spirals and Recirculation in the Subtropical Gyre

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1992
Abstract The influence of cooling in a western boundary current on the recirculation of parcels in the subtropical gyre and their eventual transfer into the subpolar gyre is investigated. It is shown that heat loss to the atmosphere and the resulting vertical convection of dense water in the Gulf Stream of a general circulation primitive equation model

Meridional Location of the Pacific Ocean Subtropical Gyre

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2000
Abstract The observed subtropical gyre in the North Pacific shows a shift in meridional location with depth. At shallow levels the density deviation peaks at around 15°N while at deep levels the peak is more like 30°N. It is argued here using analytical solutions to the beta-plane shallow-water equations that such a shift can be explained by the ...

On the Circulation of the Warm Water of the Subtropical Gyres

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1984
Abstract A ventilated thermocline model is used to discuss the circulation of the warm water of the subtropical gyre. It is suggested on theoretical grounds that the warm water layers that outcrop well south of the zero wind-stress curl line are completely replenished by the mass flux pumped down from the upper Ekman layer while recirculation of mass ...

Decadal Spinup of the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2007
Abstract An increase in the circulation of the South Pacific Ocean subtropical gyre, extending from the sea surface to middepth, is observed over 12 years. Datasets used to quantify the decadal gyre spinup include satellite altimetric height, the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) hydrographic and float survey of the South Pacific,

Cross-Gyre Ventilation of the Subtropical Gyre: An Internal Mode in the Ventilated Thermocline

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1984
Abstract A model of cross-gyre geostrophic flow is presented. It is a two-layer model of the (Northern Hemisphere) subtropical thermocline above a resting lower ocean. The northern boundary of the gyre is taken to be a latitude circle on which the Ekman pumping vanishes.

Siderophore cycling in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

2023
Across large regions of the surface ocean, the essential micronutrient iron (Fe) limits the growth of microbes, including phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria. In order to adapt to chronic low Fe conditions, some heterotrophic bacteria are able to produce siderophores, which are small organic ligands with extraordinarily high stability constant for

Remineralization Ratios in the Subtropical North Pacific Gyre

Aquatic Geochemistry, 2000
Based on a new mixing model of two end-members, the water column remineralization ratios of P/N/Corg - O2 = 1/13 ± 1/135 ± 18/170 ± 9 are obtained for the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) data set at station ALOHA. The traditional Redfield ratios of P/N/Corg/–O2 = 1/16/106/138 have standard deviations of more than 50%, when they are based on the average ...

On the interannual variability of nitrogen fixation in the subtropical gyres

Journal of Marine Research, 2009
Time-series observations of geochemical tracers and diazotroph abundances in the northern subtropical gyres suggest variability in nitrogen fixation on interannual and longer timescales. Using a highly idealized model of the biogeochemistry and ecology of a subtropical gyre, we explore the previously proposed hypothesis that such variability is ...
