Land use history and landscape forest cover determine tropical forest recovery

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2365-2381, October 2024.
Both a higher land use intensity and fragmented forest landscape decreases the speed of forest recovery, indicating that human actions and landscape transformation shape the course of succession. Restoration in fragmented forest landscapes through natural regeneration is more suitable in areas with low previous land use intensity, higher forest ...

Suppression of reed canarygrass by assisted succession: A sixteen‐year restoration experiment

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 8, Page 1805-1816, August 2024.
Invasive species management and the restoration of target plant communities can be aided by assisting successional trajectories that have stalled. We document a restoration strategy for forests invaded by shade‐intolerant invaders that is both effective and economical, as only a simple site preparation and single planting effort is required ...

Succession and seasonality drive tropical butterfly assembly after an extreme hurricane

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 3, May 2024.
Butterfly communities were monitored in two nearby Puerto Rican forests for 1 year, beginning 6 months after Hurricane Maria. Neither abundances nor taxonomic diversity followed unidirectional trends during this early stage of succession; instead, seasonal peaks, and valleys were more prevalent. Key functional traits (i.e., wing size, shape, and color)

Farmers' Perceptions of Obstacles to Business Development Perceptions des agriculteurs quant aux obstacles au développement des entreprises Hindernisse in der Unternehmensentwicklung und ihre Wahrnehmung in der Landwirtschaft

open access: yesEuroChoices, Volume 23, Issue 1, Page 56-62, April 2024.
Summary This article examines perceived obstacles to business development of Dutch dairy farmers and compares them to Dutch broiler farmers and Swedish farmers. Understanding farmers' perceived obstacles is crucial for developing effective policies to support sustainable and resilient farms.

Effects of human depopulation and warming climate on bird populations in Japan

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 2, April 2024.
Abstract Quantifying biodiversity trends in economically developed countries, where depopulation, associated secondary succession, and climate warming are ongoing, provides insights for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. However, few studies have assessed the impacts of secondary succession and climate warming on species’ population ...

Past, present and future revitalization trends in Canadian mid‐size city downtowns

open access: yesCanadian Geographer / Le géographe canadien, Volume 68, Issue 1, Page 12-23, Spring / printemps 2024.
ABSTRACT The article is a critical review of the literature investigating the impact suburbanization has had since the mid‐20th century on the downtowns of Canadian mid‐size cities and the strategies deployed to revitalize these districts. It demonstrates that large city downtowns are more likely than their mid‐size city counterparts to enjoy ...

We Are Not Born Alone and We Do Not Die Alone: Protecting Intergenerational Solidarity and Refraining Cain-ism Through Forced Heirship

open access: yesOñati Socio-Legal Series, 2014
In the current academic debate on family and succession law, the abolition or reform of forced heirship is often advocated. It is argued that this institution does not respond to the expectations and needs of today’s society.

Planting exceptional tropical tree species to increase long‐term carbon storage in assisted secondary succession

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 1, Page 7-12, January 2024.
By increasing the representation of exceptional species in reforestation efforts, we could potentially boost long‐term carbon storage in reforestation projects focussed on carbon sequestration. However, our approach is not a substitute for protecting existing old primary forests and reforested lands plus reducing deforestation and emissions.
