Soft Palate Movement During Sucking Behavior

Dysphagia, 2003
To clarify the aspects and role of oropharyngeal closure, soft palate movements during sucking were observed and then assessed by electromyographic and fluoroscopic analyses. Three patterns of sucking movements by the palatoglossus and levator veli palatini muscles were analyzed with electromyographic means in seven healthy adults.

Aberrations in Sucking Behavior of Low‐birthweight Infants

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1978
SUMMARYThe purpose of this study was to determine (1) if infants of low birthweight who had been severely stressed during the perinatal‐neonatal period had aberrant sucking behavior in contrast to low‐birthweight infants who had been mildly stressed during the same period; (2) if the mildly‐stressed infants had patterns of sucking behavior similar to ...

Newborn Sucking Behavior Affected by Obstetric Sedation

Pediatrics, 1966
Newborn infants whose mothers received a single dose of obstetric sedation during labor sucked at significantly lower rates and pressures, and consumed less nutrient than infants born to mothers who received no obstetric Fig. 5. Effect of obstetric sedation on nutrient consumption during sucking. sedation.

Nutritive and nonnutritive sucking and the temporal organization of the sucking behavior of domestic piglets

Developmental Psychobiology, 1989
AbstractDetailed video recordings of the sucking behavior of one piglet from each of four litters were analyzed to determine how the components of piglet suckling behavior are organized in relation to the time of milk ejection and the temporal pattern of grunting by the sow.

Reinforcement from the sucking environment and subsequent modification of sucking behavior in the human neonate

Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1974
Abstract The reinforcing aspects of sucking behavior in 36 human newborns was examined in a limited instrumental conditioning paradigm where sucking was both operant and reinforcer. During training, response density (rate based on sucking opportunity time) and latency were measures of two components of nonnutritive sucking, contingent negative ...

Sucking Behavior of Preterm Neonates As a Predictor of Developmental Outcomes

Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, 2009
The relationship between the pattern of sucking behavior of preterm infants during the early weeks of life and neurodevelopmental outcomes during the first year of life was evaluated. The study sample consisted of 105 preterm infants (postmenstrual age [PMA] at birth = 30.5 +/- 2.8 weeks [mean +/- SD]; birth weight = 1476 +/- 460 g; mean length of ...

Effect of Nutrient upon the Sucking Behavior of Newborn Infants

Psychosomatic Medicine, 1967
Neonatal sucking behavior varies as a function of the nutrient used. Test feedings showed significant intertrial consistency and significant intrainfant reliability of repeated measures of newborn sucking for milk formula, but not of repeated measures of sucking for corn syrup solution.

Newborn sucking behavior and its relation to grasping

Infant Behavior and Development, 1991
Abstract Previous reports have suggested a synchrony between sucking and grasping behaviors in human newborns. This was studied by measuring sucking during grasping and nongrasping and under two fluid conditions. Grasping (traction) was induced and recorded through use of a cylindrical rod suspended from a pressure transducer, allowing continuous ...
