SCD continues to be an important cause of death and morbidity. Despite expanding insight into the mechanisms causing SCD, the population at high risk is not being effectively identified. Although there is still much to do in the management phase of SCD (predicting the efficacy of various therapies), recent clinical trials have helped define the ...

Sudden deaths are appallingly frequent in populations where coronary heart disease is highly prevalent. Half the annual total of coronary mortality occurs suddenly and unexpectedly in a matter of minutes. Hence, there is an appropriate great interest in sudden death and the possible controllable risk factors.

Competitive sports activity is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiovascular death (SCD) in adolescents and young adults with clinically silent cardiovascular disorders. While in middle-aged/senior athletes atherosclerotic coronary artery disease accounts for the vast majority of SCDs, in young athletes the spectrum of substrates is wider ...

Sudden Death and Benzodiazepines
The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, 1996A study of 16 deaths associated with toxic concentrations of benzodiazepines during the period of 5 years leading up to July 1994 is presented. Cases where other drugs, including ethanol, had contributed to the death were excluded. All cases were subject to a full macroscopic and microscopic examination by pathologists, and all cases were subject to a ...

A study of victims of alcohol abuse was performed on the case files of the Office of the Medical Examiner of Metropolitan Dade County in Miami, Florida. During the year 1983, all cases in which alcoholism, either acute or chronic, was the cause of death primarily or contributory in a natural or accidental manner of death were collected. These 118 cases

Competitive sports activity is associated with an increase in the risk of sudden cardiovascular death (SCD) in susceptible adolescents and young adults with clinically silent cardiovascular disorders. Screening including 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) has been demonstrated to allow identification of athletes affected by malignant heart muscle diseases

The diagnosis of epilepsy carries an excess mortality risk which is highest during the first 10 years following diagnosis, particularly during the first 2 year& 2. Some of this may be related to suicide37 4 or accident5-7. Convulsive status epilepticus as a cause of death in people with a diagnosis of epilepsy seems to be a relatively rare phenomenon ...

Sudden cardiac death is often due to a ventricular arrhythmia. When a patient presents with a malignant arrhythmia unrelated to a transient reversible cause, there is a high probability of recurrent arrhythmia and sudden death. Clinical trials have shown a uniform survival benefit from implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in survivors ...

Pediatrics, 1978
The majority of adolescent deaths are sudden and unexpected; of these, the great majority result from violence. These violent deaths largely accounted for the 25% increase in total adolescent mortality during the 1960s. Yet, sudden death in adolescence is not a distinct entity and receives little study from either pediatricians or pathologists.
