The condition of "sudden hearing loss" is characterized by an abrupt and usually unilateral reduction of hearing. The loss may affect any frequency and may range from mild to profound in degree. This type of hearing loss causes particular difficulty in assessment because several chronic conditions may manifest similar initial symptoms.

Vestibular mapping assessment in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss
Ear and Hearing, 2021Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of semicircular canal (SCC) and otolith organ dysfunction by vestibular mapping, and to determine the clinical implications of treatment outcomes in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss

The clinical value of 4‐hour delayed‐enhanced 3D‐FLAIR MR images in sudden hearing loss
Clinical Otolaryngology, 2019The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of 4‐hour delayed‐enhanced 3.0 Tesla (3T) 3D‐fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR imaging in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Medical Clinics of North America, 1991Hearing is one of our most important senses and its sudden loss can be frightening and frustrating for the patient and his or her physician. Despite multiple reports of sudden SNHL over the years, we still do not have a universally accepted definition.

Pediatric Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2016Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is defined as sudden unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with at least 30 dB decrease in threshold in 3 contiguous test frequencies occurring over 72 hours or less. It is rare among children. The mechanism of the process and prognosis of the disorder remains unclear.

Sudden Hearing Loss in Children
Clinical Pediatrics, 2014Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is defined as a unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with at least 30 dB decrease in threshold in 3 contiguous test frequencies occurring over 72 hours or less. It is very rare in children. Sudden hearing loss is a symptom that suggests that there is a problem in the inner ear, surrounding ...

Histopathology of sudden hearing loss
The Laryngoscope, 1990AbstractEleven temporal bones from eight patients who had clinical histories of sudden hearing loss (SHL) were studied to assess the possible etiopathogenesis. The origin of SHL in seven ears from five patients was obscure, but appeared to be due to multiple causes.

Iloprost-induced sudden hearing loss
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2007We report a patient who developed sudden, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss during therapeutic use of iloprost for Raynaud's phenomenon. The sudden hearing loss was attributed to iloprost use and completely reversed in eight days with conservative therapy. Iloprost may be a potentially ototoxic drug, causing sudden hearing loss.

Sudden deafness has been commonly associated with cochlear disturbance. Vascular accident, 1-12 acute rise in labyrinthine pressure, 13-14 and retarded blood flow in the internal auditory artery 15-16 have all been hypothesized. Concurrently, viral infection and toxic neuritis of the eighth nerve have also been proposed as possible etiologies.
