Prenatal Sugar Consumption and Late-Life Human Capital and Health: Analyses Based on Postwar Rationing and Polygenic Scores [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Maternal sugar consumption in utero may have a variety of effects on offspring. We exploit the abolishment of the rationing of sweet confectionery in the UK on April 24, 1949, and its subsequent reintroduction some months later, in an era of otherwise uninterrupted rationing of confectionery (1942-1953), sugar (1940-1953) and many other foods, and we ...

Bio‐Based and Degradable Food Packaging Materials: Where Are They?

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 6, March 16, 2025.
This review discusses different biopolymer‐based, biodegradable materials (bbMs) and their applicability to food packaging applications. The review especially focuses on the material properties of those bbMs taking into account recent developments from academia and industry and discusses different challenges that still need to be overcome to find, in ...

Stability analysis and performance of promising sugarcane varieties for yield and quality traits

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Plant Breeding, 2021
Four promising varieties of sugarcane, along with the commercial variety, GT54/9 were evaluated for yield, yield components, and quality traits. The environments were different ages of harvest time (11, 12, and 13 months old) of two plant cane crops (2 ...

Lightweight, Strong, Hydrostable, Bendable, Rolled‐Up, and Biodegradable Straws Enabled by Nano‐ and Microarchitecture Tuning of the Wood Cell Wall and Molecular Welding Strategy

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 9, Issue 4, April 2025.
An all‐natural straw is fabricated through nano‐ and microarchitectural tuning of the wood cell wall using a molecular welding strategy. These all‐natural straws offer multiple advantages, including superior mechanical performance, excellent water and beverage stability, biocompatibility, full biodegradability, and recyclability.

‘Had it not been for her’: Gender, Care Labour and Disability in the British Caribbean, 1788–1834

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This article explores the intersections between gender, disability and care labour in the slaveholding societies of the British Caribbean from 1788 to 1834. Considered economic burdens by slaveholders, aged and disabled bondswomen were made productive through caring for their enslaved peers, many of whom were themselves temporarily ...

Volumetric based mass flow estimation on sugarcane harvesters [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Yield monitors on harvesters are a key component of precision agriculture. Mass flow estimation is the critical factor to measure, and having this allows for field productivity analysis, adjustments to machine efficiency, and cost minimization by ensuring trucks are filled maximally without exceeding weight limits.

Detection of Sugar-Lectin Interactions by Multivalent Dendritic Sugar Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yesAppl. Phys. Lett. 101, 053701 (2012), 2012
We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) decorated with sugar functionalized poly (propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer is a very sensitive platform to quantitatively detect carbohydrate recognizing proteins, namely, lectins. The changes in electrical conductivity of SWNT in field effect transistor device due to carbohydrate - protein ...

Integrating Dense Genotyping with High‐Throughput Phenotyping Empowers the Genetic Dissection of Berry Quality and Resilience Traits in Grapevine

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Researchers develop advanced tools to study grapevine traits like berry quality and stress resilience. A 200K SNP array and high‐throughput phenotyping enable the identification of loci linked to berry shape, sugar content, acidity, and cold tolerance. Functional validation of genes such as NAC08 reveals roles in cold tolerance.
