ULCER, ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AND SUICIDE

Attempted suicide and suicide have been investigated among 2,619 patients suffering from duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and ulcer dyspepsia without ulcer demonstrable by x‐ray. There was no difference in the percentage of attempted suicides and suicides among the three ulcer groups or between the sexes.

In many cases the primary aim is not death but some other outcome, such as demonstrating distress to other people, seeking a change in other people’s behaviour or temporary escape. Men are four times more likely than women to die by suicide, however women make more nonfatal suicide attempts than men.

Clofibrate, a drug with lipid-lowering and anticoagulant properties, is being used extensively in the treatment of atherosclerosis. Few toxic effects result from regular doses in man or large amounts in animals; effects of large quantities in man are unknown.
