Marginality, Suicides, and Suicide Attempts

Palmer (1960), influenced by the Frustration/Aggression theorem, proposed that suicide is the likely, albeit extreme, form of aggression among overly socialized members of society (middle and upper classes) while homicide is the likely extreme form of aggression among the marginal and/or undersocialized (lower classes).

Attempted suicide

This study comprises 200 cases from a total of 1,155 patients who attempted suicide in 1975 and were admitted to the casualty department of Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo, which has a catchment area comprising approximately 3 million people. A crude rate of suicide attempts in Cairo would be 38.5/100,000.

Adolescent Suicide Attempts

The conditions of 40 adolescents in treatment following a suicide attempt were diagnosed according to the multiaxial classification of the American Psychiatric Association's proposed third edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual. All were psychiatrically ill before the suicide attempt.

ULCER, ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AND SUICIDE

Attempted suicide and suicide have been investigated among 2,619 patients suffering from duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and ulcer dyspepsia without ulcer demonstrable by x‐ray. There was no difference in the percentage of attempted suicides and suicides among the three ulcer groups or between the sexes.
