Sedimentary Metagenomics Reveal Avian Community Transitions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We used sedimentary ancient DNA shotgun metagenomics to reconstruct past bird communities in northern high‐latitude environments. By using long time series and data collected across a large environmental gradient, we contributed in a unique and explorative way to the understanding of palaeoecological dynamics between birds and their habitat on the ...

FIRST RECORD OF A BREEDING COLONY OF MASKED BOOBY (SULA DACTYLATRA LESSON, 1831; SULIDAE) IN THE MAIN ISLAND OF THE ARCHIPELAGO OF FERNANDO DE NORONHA (PERNAMBUCO, BRAZIL)

open access: yesPapéis Avulsos de Zoologia
Fernando de Noronha Archipelago is one of the places with the highest richness of seabirds in Brazil; however, little information about the breeding biology of many species is available.

Structural instability and concerted evolution in the mitochondrial control region of the grey‐headed lapwing Vanellus cinereus during range expansion

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 2, March 2026.
Mitochondrial genome duplications, particularly within the control region, can influence evolutionary trajectories and population structure, yet their prevalence and dynamics in birds remain insufficiently understood. The rey‐headed lapwing Vanellus cinereus has recently undergone a rapid range expansion in Japan, providing a unique opportunity to ...

Using the marine flyways concept to accelerate ocean conservation

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 3, March 2026.
Implementing the marine flyways framework can secure ecological connectivity across the marine environment, including in synergistic implementation of existing regional policy instruments and multiple multilateral environmental agreements, including CMS, the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the Agreement on the Conservation ...

A review of the occurrence of inter‐colony segregation of seabird foraging areas and the implications for marine environmental impact assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Understanding the determinants of species’ distributions is a fundamental aim in ecology and a prerequisite for conservation but is particularly challenging in the marine environment.

A Ground Surface Rolling Method for Detecting Environmental DNA of Terrestrial Animals

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
The Koro‐rin sampler enables surface‐based eDNA detection of terrestrial animals. This approach captured a broad range of bird and mammal taxa, including small and cryptic species, and revealed seasonal patterns in animal presence, complementing conventional monitoring methods.
