Quantification of Small‐Scale Spatial Patterns in Alpine–Treeline Ecotones

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Alpine treeline ecotones, when viewed up close, display considerable variation in spatial patterns, which have been associated with different responses to climate change. Two important dimensions of treeline‐ecotone spatial patterns are the abruptness of

Tumor and germline testing with next generation sequencing in epithelial ovarian cancer: a prospective paired comparison using an 18‐gene panel

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Genetic testing in epithelial ovarian cancer includes both germline and tumor‐testing. This approach often duplicates resources. The current prospective study assessed the feasibility of tumor‐first multigene testing by comparing tumor tissue with germline testing of peripheral blood using an 18‐gene NGS panel in 106 patients.

Avances metodológicos para el estudio conjunto de la información genética, genealógica y geográfica en análisis evolutivos y de distribución Methodological advances for the combined study of genetic, genealogical and geographical information in evolutionary and distributional analyses

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).

Divide and conquer in ABC: Expectation-Progagation algorithms for likelihood-free inference

open access: yes, 2015
ABC algorithms are notoriously expensive in computing time, as they require simulating many complete artificial datasets from the model. We advocate in this paper a "divide and conquer" approach to ABC, where we split the likelihood into n factors, and ...

Firearm Use in Violent Crime in the U.S. and Alaska, 1980-2011 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This fact sheet presents national and statewide statistics from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports program on the prevalence of murder in the U.S. and Alaska from 1980 to 2011, as well as data on the use of firearms in murders (both for the U.S. as a whole,
