Smart Sensor‐Integrated Lysimeter System for Affordable on‐Farm Crop Water Monitoring and Irrigation Management

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Accurate monitoring of crop water use is critical for precision irrigation, yet conventional lysimeter systems remain too costly and complex for widespread adoption. This study presents the development and field validation of a low‐cost, information and communication technology (ICT)‐enabled weighing lysimeter system that integrates load cells,

Optimizing Water and Nitrogen Application to Furrow-Irrigated Summer Corn Using the AquaCrop Model

open access: yesAgronomy
Summer maize is an important grain crop in the North China Plain, but the problem of irrational application of water and fertilizer is becoming increasingly serious.

Drought Risk in Mango and Avocado Orchards: Insights Into Plant Water Relations and Irrigation‐Related Agronomic Solutions

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Climate change is making water availability more uncertain, with growing consequences for the productivity and long‐term sustainability of tropical and subtropical fruit orchards. Mangifera indica L. and Persea americana Mill. both require large amounts of water to sustain growth and productivity.

Risk return of forward contracting corn with crop insurance

open access: yesJournal of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, EarlyView.
Abstract Forward contracting is a common pre‐harvest marketing strategy for row crops, with evidence suggesting higher prices during summer months due to embedded weather risk premiums. While aggressive forward contracting increases farmers' yield risk and potential non‐delivery penalties, crop revenue protection can help offset these financial burdens.

An Ammoniated Straw Incorporation Increased Biomass Production and Water Use Efficiency in an Annual Wheat-Maize Rotation System in Semi-Arid China

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Water shortage and excessive chemical fertilizers application result in low soil water and nutrient availability and limit crop production in the Loess Plateau of Northwest China.

Health Biomarkers of Pesticide Exposure in Rural Populations of Santa Fe, Argentina: Oxidative Stress and Genotoxicity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to quantify pesticide residues in environmental matrices and plasma and to evaluate their potential effects on oxidative stress and DNA damage in rural populations of Santa Fe province. Soil and rainwater samples were collected, and biological samples and semistructured surveys were obtained from volunteers in three ...

Exogenous melatonin alleviates post-flowering natural high-temperature stress in maize (Zea mays L.) by promoting photosynthesis and antioxidant defense responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
IntroductionHigh-temperature stress severely restricts the growth, development and yield formation of summer maize. Foliar application of exogenous melatonin has been widely demonstrated to enhance stress tolerance and alleviate abiotic stress in crops ...

Field Studies on the Influence of High‐Voltage Direct Transmission Underground Cables on Soils Along the SuedLink Route in Southwest Germany

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
During regular operation of the SuedLink at a load ≤75 %, the average increase in temperature in the plowing horizon is expected to be less than 1.6°C in the soils along the route in Southwest Germany. ABSTRACT Background The SuedLink was planned as a high‐voltage direct‐current underground cable route. The construction itself is a massive intervention

Spatial and temporal variation in survival of female wild turkeys

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We monitored 370 female wild turkeys across North Carolina's 3 ecoregions from 2020‐2022 to understand factors influencing their survival. Female survival varied by ecoregion and behavior state, with the incubation period having the lowest survival rates. None of the land cover variables affected survival.

Modeling impacts of climate-induced yield variability and adaptations on wheat and maize in a sub-tropical monsoon climate - using fuzzy logic

open access: yesScientific Reports
Climate change is causing more frequent and extraordinary extreme weather events that are already negatively affecting crop production. There is a need for improved climate risk assessment by developing smart adaptation strategies for sustainable future ...
