Constraints on sunspot group lifetimes from far-side Sun-as-a-star helioseismology with BiSON [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
ABSTRACT Frequencies of low-degree solar p modes are sensitive to activity over the entire Sun, including the unobservable far-side hemisphere. When frequency shifts extracted from week-long Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON) data sets are fitted to a linear combination of observed near-side activity and a far-side proxy ...

No swan song for Sun-as-a-star helioseismology: Performances of the Solar-SONG prototype for individual mode characterisation [PDF]

open access: hybridAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2021
The GOLF instrument on board SoHO has been in operation for almost 25 years, but the ageing of the instrument has now strongly affected its performance, especially in the low-frequency pressure-mode (p-mode) region. At the end of the SoHO mission, the ground-based network BiSON will remain the only facility able to perform Sun-integrated helioseismic ...

Global helioseismology (WP4.1): From the Sun to the stars & solar analogs [PDF]

open access: diamondEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
Sun-as-a star observations put our star as a reference for stellar observations. Here, I review the activities in which the SPACEINN global seismology team (Working Package WP4.1) has worked during the past 3 years. In particular, we will explain the new deliverables available on the SPACEINN seismic+ portal.

Helioseismology: A Fantastic Tool to Probe the Interior of the Sun [PDF]

open access: green, 2003
Helioseismology, the study of global solar oscillations, has proved to be an extremely powerful tool for the investigation of the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun. Studies of time changes in frequency observations of solar oscillations from helioseismology experiments on Earth and in space have shown, for example, that the Sun's shape varies ...

Differential Rotation of the Sun from helioseismology and magnetic field study. [PDF]

open access: bronzeProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractDifferential rotational rate of the large scale magnetic field and its temporal dependence has been evidenced at different latitudes through activity cycles 21-23. Rotational rate of the magnetic field at the latitudes above 55 degrees doesn't getting slower.

Far-side helioseismology with Sun-as-a-star data: the solar cycle as seen with 7-d-long BiSON time series [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
ABSTRACT We present results from fitting p-mode spectra derived from 7-d segments of Sun-as-a-star helioseismic observations from the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network covering 32 yr. The results show a clear dependence of the mode frequencies on solar activity, and the frequency dependence of the sensitivity to activity can also be ...

Helioseismology and p+p $\to$ d + e$^+$ + $ν_e$ in the sun

open access: green, 1997
By using a phenomenological field theory of nucleon-nucleon interactions, Oberhummer et al. found a cross section of p+p $\to$ d + e$^+$ + $ν_e$ about 2.9 times that given by the potential approach and adopted in Standard Solar Model calculations. We show that a solar model with $S=2.9 S_{SSM}$ is inconsistent with helioseismic data, the difference ...

Acoustic Wave Propagation in the Sun: Implications for Wave Field and Time-Distance Helioseismology [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 2003
We present results of the numerical simulation of acoustic wave propagation in the Sun's subphotospheric layers. A finite-difference code is used to calculate the pressure perturbation in the frequency domain. We show that the oscillatory seismic signals are closely associated with the solar density and sound speed structures.
