Direct solar radiation: spectrum and irradiance derived from sun-photometer measurements

Applied Optics, 1988
The continuous spectrum of the direct solar radiation from lambda= 330 to 2690 nm, penetrating a cloudless atmosphere and arriving on the earth surface, is determined by measuring the solar irradiance in ten selected discrete spectral ranges defined by interference filters.

Compact light-emitting-diode sun photometer for atmospheric optical depth measurements

Applied Optics, 1995
A new compact light-emitting diode (LED) sun photometer, in which a LED is used as a spectrally selective photodetector as well as a nonlinear feedback element in the operational amplifier, has been developed. The output voltage that is proportional to the logarithm of the incident solar intensity permits the direct measurement of atmospheric optical ...

Transmissometer versus sun photometer measurements of the aerosol optical properties

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
Atmospheric aerosol particles affect the Earth's radiative balance both in the cloud-free and the cloudy atmosphere. The direct effect of aerosols is related with scattering and absorption of solar radiation, and as a consequence, reduction of the amount of radiation reaching the surface.

Aerosol Measurement in the Australian Outback: Intercomparison of Sun Photometers

Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2003
The low background aerosol loadings prevailing over much of the Australian continent necessitate careful attention to the calibration of sun photometers. The validity of such calibrations can only be assessed objectively by intercomparison of independent systems operating side by side.

Comparison of laser-based and conventional calibrations of sun photometers

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
Sun photometers are used to characterize the radiative properties of the atmosphere. They measure both the incident solar irradiance as well as the sky radiance (from scattered incident flux). Global networks of sun photometers provide data products such as aerosol optical thickness derived from these measurements.
