The unpublished observations of an expert committee headed by M.N. Deshpande in 1997 form the subject matter of this chapter. There are fairly critical observations here about the state of the temple and several suggestions made about how conservation should be undertaken at a World Heritage monument such as the Konark.

Solstice Misalignment at Sun Temple: Correcting Fewkes

ABSTRACTA reexamination of Sun Temple, Mesa Verde National Park, demonstrates that Fewkes erred in stating that the front or south wall of the structure was aligned to the summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset. The front wall is not aligned to any solstitial or equinoctial rise/set point.

Construction of a Temple with Regard to the Rising Sun Ray

Using the example of a number of cultural traditions, the author considers a construction of the temple structure along a rising sun ray. There are two main types of temples built according to the rising sun ray: the temples oriented towards the sunrise by their sanctuaries, and the temples oriented towards the sunrise by the entrance portal.

Publication of the Amarna period block MRAH inv. 4491, part of a sloping balustrade perhaps from a sun-shade temple of Princess Ankhesenpaaten in Memphis. The inscription is noteworthy for containing a unique instance of the re-carving of the name of Aten from form IIa to either IIb or III. There follows an excursus on the Memphite ‘Horizon of Aten’.

Although the ceremonial center of Vilcanota was called the third most important temple in the Inka empire in the sixteenth century, its exact location and meaning have remained matters of conjecture. In this article I examine historical and archaeological information which demonstrates that the temple was located at the pass of La Raya.
