Hydraulic jump dynamics above supercell thunderstorms
Science, 2021Water up Above-anvil cirrus plumes are stratospheric cloud formations that form downwind from the tops of some very strong thunderstorms. Despite their common occurrence, an adequate physical model explaining many of their features and effects does not exist. O’Neill et al .

Abstract Over a decade of monitoring mesospheric transient luminous events (TLEs) above U.S. high plains storms confirmed sprites are almost exclusively associated with positive polarity cloud-to-ground lightning (+CGs). Following C. T. R. Wilson's theory proposed in 1925, only those +CGs lowering large amounts of charge to ground should induce sprites.

Abstract Analyses of tornadoes that are not associated with supercells are presented. The database for this study was collected during CINDE (Convention INitiation and Downburst Experiment), a field project operated during the summer of 1987 in Colorado. A total of 27 visual vortices were studied.

The Data SuperCell (DSC) is a new, disk-based data archive deployed and in production at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC). It specifically deals with the archival demands of large data processing in an economic way. DSC incorporates PSCs SLASH2, layered filesystem technology, with commodity hardware and open software, to provide superior ...

Efficient calculational techniques for reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) are reported for surfaces with large periodic supercells. A fast Fourier transform approach enables the computer time scaling of a conventional RHEED calculation to be reduced to n2 log (n), where n is the number of diffracted beams used in the calculation.

Invented Forces in Supercell Models
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2021AbstractThis paper examines methods used in supercell models to maintain a steady, sheared, horizontally uniform environment with a three-force balance in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) and a two-force balance above it. Steady environments are maintained while ignoring the thermal-wind balance that permits large shear above the PBL.
