The Evolution of Hail Production in Simulated Supercell Storms

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2021
AbstractHailstorms pose a significant socioeconomic risk, necessitating detailed assessments of how the hail threat changes throughout their lifetimes. Hail production involves the favorable juxtaposition of ingredients, but how storm evolution affects these ingredients is unknown, limiting understanding of how hail production evolves.

Supercell-External Storms and Boundaries Acting as Catalysts for Tornadogenesis

Monthly Weather Review, 2023
Abstract It has long been observed that interactions of a supercell with other storms or storm-scale boundaries sometimes seem to directly instigate tornadogenesis. First, the authors explore the frequency of such constructive interactions. Radar data from WSR-88D are used to categorize 136 tornadic supercells into isolated supercells and supercells ...

Dust Lofting and Ingestion by Supercell Storms

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2012
Abstract Recent research pertaining to aerosol impacts on cloud microphysics has shown a need for understanding mineral dust entrainment into moist convection. The goal of this study is to examine the pathways in which nonmicrophysically active mineral dust is entrained into supercell storms within three commonly observed dust regimes ...

Influences of CAPE on Hail Production in Simulated Supercell Storms

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2022
Abstract Lasting updrafts are necessary to produce severe hail; conventional wisdom suggests that extremely large hailstones require updrafts of commensurate strength. Because updraft strength is largely controlled by convective available potential energy (CAPE), one would expect environments with larger CAPE to be conducive to storms producing larger ...

Lightning location relative to storm structure in a supercell storm and a multicell storm

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1987
Relationships between lightning location and storm structure are examined for one radar volume scan in each of two mature, severe storms. One of these storms had characteristics of a supercell storm, and the other was a multicell storm. Data were analyzed from dual‐Doppler radar and dual‐VHF lightning‐mapping systems.
