As the size of a power system continues to expand, generation capacity and transmission network expansion may be restricted by the fault current limit. Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) are one of the promising fault current limiting technologies that could have potential for greater use in power systems.

Power flow patterns and fault current levels are influenced by the introduction of distributed generations (DGs) in an electric power system. In particular, the change in the fault current levels caused by DG installation may require a change in the coordination of relays to prevent their misoperation. When DGs are installed in an electric power system,

This paper presents a comparative study of resistive and inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for power systems transient stability improvement. Two applications of transient stability assessment are presented in this paper: The first shows the efficiency of the resistive and inductive SFCL in series with a generator, the second uses ...

This paper presents the application of Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) for smart grids in order to reduce possible effect of abnormal fault current. Increased demand results in increased generation capacity in power systems which has lead to increased fault current.

Abstract In our first attempt to design a single phase R-SFCL in India, we have chosen the typical rating of a medium voltage level (3.3 kVrms, 200 Arms, 1Φ) R-SFCL. The step-by-step design procedure for the R-SFCL involves conductor selection, time dependent electro-thermal simulations and recovery time optimization after fault removal.
