Summary: We formulate two-dimensional topological gravity starting from local \(N=2\) superconformal geometry. The theory is free from the very beginning. The usual ``twisting'' of the \(N=2\) algebra emerges from symmetry breaking when we expand about a nonzero value for one of the ghost fields.

Abstract There are two directions one might take to generalize supersymmetry and its models as we have presented them until this point: (a) to try to incorporate gravity as the fourth fundamental interaction, or (b) by using our experience with gauge theories, to try to make supersymmetry local.
