Inhibition of Labyrinthine Nystagmus by Visual Fixation: Effects of Ablation of Visual Cortex and Superior Colliculi

open access: closedAnnals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1979
A study was conducted to destroy two specific areas of the cat's visual system in order to determine if these lesions would affect the visual inhibition of calorically-induced vestibular nystagmus. The occipital visual cortex was removed in eight cats and the superior colliculi were removed bilaterally in nine cats.

Single‐cell responses associated with rhythmic slow‐wave potentials in rat superior colliculi

open access: closedJournal of Neuroscience Research, 1975
AbstractThe present study was designed to investigate the features of rhythmic slow‐wave potentials in the superior colliculi of rats and to study the relationship between these potentials and the activity of single collicular neurons. In contrast to studies in other portions of the visual system, rhythmic slow‐wave potentials in the colliculi fell ...

Discrimination learning of grating orientation in visually deprived cats and the role of the superior colliculi.

Behavioral Neuroscience, 1996
Four cats deprived binocularly of pattern vision (BD cats), 4 control cats reared also in the laboratory (C cats), and 4 normal wild cats (N cats) were trained to discriminate gratings of progressively smaller difference in orientation. Differences in learning were found only in fine orientation discriminations.

The influence of activation of the superior colliculi on convulsive activity during picrotoxin kindling

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 1993
It has been demonstrated in experiments in rats in which kindling was induced by repeated subconvulsive doses of picrotoxin (1.0 mg/kg) that the bilateral microinjection of picrotoxin, bicuculline, and penicillin into the deep layers of the superior colliculi of the corpora quadrigemina leads to the appearance of a generator of pathologically ...

Convergence of Y and non-Y channels onto single neurons in the superior colliculi of the cat

Neuroreport, 2001
Receptive field properties of single neurons in the cat superior colliculus were examined following selective conduction-block of Y-type fibers in contralateral optic nerve. Although the responses evoked by photic stimuli presented via the Y-blocked eye were significantly weaker than those evoked by stimuli presented via the normal eye, > 85% of ...

The organization of neurons in the nucleus of the lateral lemniscus projecting to the superior and inferior colliculi in the rat

Brain Research, 1985
The topographic organization of neurons in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) which project to the superior and inferior colliculi was studied using the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the fluorescent double labeling methods.

[Facial motor responses to microstimulation of the superior colliculi in the white mouse].

open access: closedZhurnal evoliutsionnoi biokhimii i fiziologii, 1989
Facial motor responses to microstimulation of different zones of the superior colliculi have been investigated in the albino mice craniotomized under thiopental anaesthesia. Local responses of the mystacial vibrissae, upper lip and eyelids were initiated by microstimulation of the rostral parts of the inner layers of the colliculus superior (high ...

[The functional connections of the supraoptic and suprachiasmatic nuclei of the anterior hypothalamus with the superior colliculi].

Zhurnal vysshei nervnoi deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova, 1989
Interrelation of single hypothalamic (supraoptic--SO and suprachiasmatic--SCH nuclei) and light stimuli at the level of superior colliculus (SC) were studied during chronic experiments in waking rabbits. Short-term inhibitory and the subsequent facilitatory effects of the hypothalamic stimuli on SC responses induced by light flashes were established ...
