Superior Thyroid Artery Cannulation for Monitoring Carotid Artery Operation
Archives of Surgery, 1976Superior thyroid artery cannulation during carotid endarterectomy and coupling the cannula to a three-way stopcock with an anaeroid manometer allows the surgical team in the operating field to monitor mean pressures and to draw blood samples for gas analysis from the common, the internal, or the external carotid artery.

Anatomical variations of the superior thyroid and superior laryngeal arteries
Head & Neck, 2009AbstractBackgroundThere are known to be variations in the origins of the superior thyroid artery (STA), an important surgical landmark, and 1 of its branches, the superior laryngeal artery (SLA).MethodsThree hundred thirty human embalmed heminecks were dissected.

ARTERIOVENOUS FISTULAE OF THE SUPERIOR THYROID ARTERY
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery, 1982Complications of thyroid surgery are well documented in the surgical literature. A less well known complication is the development of an arteriovenous fistula. These fistulae are not inherently dangerous but can cause some discomfort to the patient. Two patients are presented that illustrate the symptoms and signs of this unusual complication.

A rare origin of the superior thyroid artery
Cells Tissues Organs, 1978In the course of a classroom dissection of a negro male (height: 167 cm; weight: 56.8 kg), an anomalous right superior thyroid artery was noted. It arose from the common carotid artery 27 mm proximal to the bifurcation into external and internal carotids.

The Superior Thyroid Artery Perforator Flap
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2012The redundant tissues of the anterior neck are well suited as a donor site for fasciocutaneous flaps in head and neck reconstruction, with similar skin quality and numerous underlying perforators. However, historic cadaveric research has limited the use of this as a donor site for the design of long and/or large flaps for fear of vascular compromise ...

Superior and middle thyroid arteries arising from the common carotid artery
Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2011We report a rare case of a left middle thyroid artery in a 71-year-old male cadaver. The middle thyroid artery arose from the anterior surface of the left common carotid artery. This artery ran anteroinferiorly and then bifurcated as it entered the lower lateral part of the left thyroid lobe. Both the right and left superior thyroid arteries arose from

Aberrant Origin of the Superior Thyroid Artery
Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, 2012Variation in the origin of arteries is a fairly common occurrence. Some of these variations are considered inconsequential, whereas others can have serious implications for medical procedures. The authors present an unusual case demonstrating an anomalous branching of the superior thyroid artery from the distal common carotid artery.

Effect of Internal Carotid Artery Stenting on Superior Thyroid Artery Doppler Flow
Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, 2014ObjectivesPatients with carotid disease are frequently referred for carotid artery stenting based on the results of carotid duplex studies. During carotid artery stenting, the stent is usually extended into the common carotid artery, thereby crossing the external carotid artery. Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding internal carotid

Pseudoaneurysm of the superior thyroid artery following revision tracheostomy
The Laryngoscope, 2012AbstractThis case report describes the presentation and management of a rare complication of pseudoaneurysm of the superior thyroid artery following tracheostomy. The majority of post‐tracheostomy bleeding is managed either with packing or surgical re‐exploration. However, angiography can pinpoint an arterial source of bleeding and allow the surgeon to

Tracheal Transplantation: Superior and Inferior Thyroid Artery Perfusion Territory
The Laryngoscope, 1998AbstractObjective: To determine the perfusion territories of the superior and inferior thyroid arteries in humans. Tracheal transplantation is a potential option for management of long‐segment tracheal stenosis. However, the maximum length of vascularized trachea that can be reliably transplanted has not been established.Study Design: The tracheal ...
