Visual Angle and the Word Superiority Effect [PDF]
Two experiments are reported in which a word superiority effect is obtained under conditions where a fixed set of alternatives are employed with positional certainty as to the critical letter, trial type (word or nonword) is mixed, and the subject is told to fixate the position of the critical letter.

On the word-superiority effect
Psychological Research, 1986Four experiments tested Johnston's (1981) hierarchical-activation account and McClelland and Rumelhart's (1981) interactive-activation account of the word-superiority effect. The hierarchical-activation account claims that the effect depends on masking.

The sentence superiority effect revisited
Cognition, 2017A sentence superiority effect was investigated using post-cued word-in-sequence identification with the rapid parallel visual presentation (RPVP) of four horizontally aligned words. The four words were presented for 200ms followed by a post-mask and cue for partial report.

Text Legibility and the Letter Superiority Effect
Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 2005Effects of font design and electronic display parameters upon text legibility were determined using a threshold size method. Participants' visual acuity (inverse of the minimum detection size, representing the threshold legibility for each condition) was measured using upper- and lowercase letters and lowercase words in combinations of 6 fonts, 3 font ...
