Superluminal motion in the quasar 3C 279

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1989
VLBI maps of the quasar 3C 279 have been made at 5, 11, and 22 GHz, at several epochs between 1981 and 1985, to study the varying structure of the compact radio source. Spectra derived from the maps show that the NE component has the highest turnover frequency, and thus probably represents the core of the source.

Evolution of the Termination Region of the Parsec-scale Jet of 3C 84 Over the Past 20 yr

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the kinematics of the parsec-scale jet in 3C 84 from 2003 November to 2022 June observed with the Very Long Baseline Array at 43 GHz. We find that the C3 component, a bright feature at the termination region of the jet component ejected from ...

Superluminal apparent motions in distant radio sources [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physics, 2005
We derive the prediction of the standard model of superluminal radio sources for the apparent transverse velocity of a radio source located at redshift z. The apparent velocity of the source is reduced by a factor of 1+z compared to that of a similar nearby source.

Extending Special Relativity to Superluminal Motion

open access: yes, 2009
Experiments done with single photon in the early 1990's produced a surprising result: that single photon pass through a photon tunnel barrier with a group velocity faster than the vacuum speed of light. Recently, a series of experiments revealed that electromagnetic wave was able to travel at a group velocity faster than $c$.

The Evolutionary Unified Scheme, Jet Asymmetry, and Superluminal Motion [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1996
The evolutionary unified scheme (Vagnetti et al., 1991; Vagnetti and Spera, 1994) is the first attempt to describe the radio source populations accounting at the same time for their cosmic evolution and their anisotropic phenomena. It achieves an interconnection between anisotropy and evolution through a changing balance between two optical components,

Chandra Study of the Proper Motion of HST-1 in the Jet of M87

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The radio galaxy M87 is well known for its jet, which features a series of bright knots observable from radio to X-ray wavelengths. We analyze the X-ray image and flux variability of the knot HST-1 in the jet.

Revisiting a Core–Jet Laboratory at High Redshift: Analysis of the Radio Jet in the Quasar PKS 2215+020 at z = 3.572

open access: yesUniverse
The prominent radio quasar PKS 2215+020 (J2217+0220) was once labelled as a new laboratory for core–jet physics at redshift z=3.572 because of its exceptionally extended jet structure traceable with very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations ...

Modeling of Long-term Afterglow Counterparts to Gravitational Wave Events: The Full View of GRB 170817A

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The arrival of gravitational wave astronomy and a growing number of time-domain-focused observatories are set to lead to an increasing number of detections of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) launched with a moderate inclination to Earth.
