Parapharyngeal Fat Pads as an Obesity‐Related Parameter for Apnea‐Hypopnea Index Severity

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, Volume 35, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT In this study, the association between obstructive sleep apnea severity and the parapharyngeal fat pad volume is examined in a population‐based sample. We included 680 participants who underwent standardised overnight polysomnography between 2008 and 2012 as part of the Study of Health in Pomerania in a sleep laboratory in Greifswald, Germany.

Prognostic Value of Liver Stiffness in Advanced Chronic Liver Disease After Hepatitis C Virus Eradication

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background & Aim Sustained‐virological‐response (SVR) after direct‐acting‐antiviral (DAA) therapy improves outcomes in patients with HCV‐related compensated‐advanced‐chronic‐liver‐disease (cACLD). However, it remains unclear whether absolute post‐SVR LSM or LSM reduction better predicts prognosis after SVR.

Ultrasound‐Based Skeletal Muscle Assessment for Prognostication in Cirrhosis: A Systematic Review

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Sarcopenia is a major determinant of adverse outcomes in cirrhosis, yet CT‐ and MRI‐based assessments are difficult to implement in routine and longitudinal practice. Ultrasound is a feasible bedside alternative, but its prognostic role remains unclear.

Optimizing Dual‐Plate Fixation of Distal Femoral Periprosthetic Fractures Using a Distal Tibial Metaphyseal Plate

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 10, Page 2238-2246, October 2026.
This study presents the preliminary evaluation of the clinical, radiographic, and functional outcomes of dual‐plating technique for distal femoral periprosthetic fractures. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical report directly using a distal tibial metaphyseal plate for the dual‐plating technique, highlighting its potential advantages in ...

Haemodynamic effects of selective venoconstriction with centhaquine in spontaneously breathing patients with mixed hypovolaemic‐vasodilatory shock

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4421-4434, 1 October 2026.
Abstract Circulatory shock remains difficult to manage because fluid resuscitation and catecholamines may exacerbate vascular dysfunction and tissue hypoperfusion. This prospective physiological analysis, embedded within a multicentre phase IV study, examined whether selectively targeting the venous circulation with centhaquine improves circulatory ...

Splenic contraction associated with sudden, transient hypotension and sympathoexcitation in humans

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4368-4381, 1 October 2026.
Abstract The spleen is traditionally recognised for its roles in immunity and blood filtration, and it is known to contract and release stored erythrocytes in hypoxic conditions. Recent findings suggest that the spleen may also contribute to cardiovascular regulation.
