The pedagogy for teaching suprasegmental features
Journal of Second Language Pronunciation, 2023Abstract Suprasegmental (prosody) deficiencies seriously affect English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ comprehensibility and intelligibility. Among suprasegmental features, the most problematic for Iranian learners is rhythm, due to fundamental differences between English and Farsi language timing patterns.

Suprasegmental features of Chinese-accented English.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011This study compares read speech by Cantonese and Mandarin learners of English with those by native speakers of English. The utterances produced by learners of English are all rated as accented. We aim to identify measurable prosodic differences leading to such perceptual judgment.

Suprasegmental features in Northern Paiute
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011The relationship between intonation and word-level stress in Northern Paiute (Western Numic; Uto-Aztecan) is described in order to support the level of phonology as a basis for the lexical, syntactic, and ideational integration of connected speech into intonation units (IUs).

Effect of alcohol on suprasegmental features of voice
2014 4th World Congress on Information and Communication Technologies (WICT 2014), 2014The effects of alcohol vary from individual to individual. Since motor co-ordination is impaired under intoxication, it affects an individual's speech production. One of the common questions which arise is; whether is it possible to detect whether a person is intoxicated by observing their speech patterns and if so can it be used to determine the ...

THE EFFECT OF INTRODUCING SUPRASEGMENTAL FEATURES TOWARDS STUDENTS’ LISTENING ABILITY
ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy), 2023This research aimed to address the difficulties faced by students in listening comprehension, particularly in understanding spoken vocabulary and grasping the overall meaning of audio materials. The study focused on investigating the effect of introducing suprasegmental features on students' listening ability.

Everyday experience tells us that it is often possible to identify a familiar speaker solely by his/her voice. Such observations reveal that speakers carry individual features in their voices. The present study examines how suprasegmental temporal features contribute to speaker-individuality.

Suprasegmental features and continuous speech recognition
Proceedings of ICASSP '94. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, 2002We first propose to model microprosody by means of a Bayesian classifier assuming multivariate Gaussian distributions on suprasegmental features. Second, we normalize the suprasegmental features by using dynamic parameters extracted from diphones. Third, we examine three different types of covariance matrices and show that a full covariance matrix per ...
