Effects of pipe outlet blocking on hydrological functioning in a degraded blanket peatland

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 35, Issue 3, March 2021., 2021
Blocking of pipe outlets in a heavily degraded UK blanket bog led to new pipe outlets appearing or seepage occurring around blocks within 90 days of blocking. Two pipes at head locations contributed more to streamflow compared to two pipes at edge locations, altogether they accounted for 11.3 % of streamflow. The degree of water‐table drawdown in gully

Microbial succession during the transition from active to inactive stages of deep-sea hydrothermal vent sulfide chimneys

open access: yesMicrobiome, 2020
Background Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are highly productive biodiversity hotspots in the deep ocean supported by chemosynthetic microorganisms. Prominent features of these systems are sulfide chimneys emanating high-temperature hydrothermal fluids ...

Identification and Assessment of Subway Construction Risk: An Integration of AHP and Experts Grading Method

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Qing Dao is one of the earliest cities that included the idea of subway construction into the city’s transportation plan. However, the construction period of a subway project is long, and the uncertainties caused by the geological conditions and surrounding environments are huge, thus a risk assessment method in subway construction is essential.

Design and Construction of an Instrumentation System to Capture the Response of Advanced Materials Impacted by Intense Proton Pulses

open access: yesShock and Vibration, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
In recent years, significant efforts were taken at CERN and other high‐energy physics laboratories to study and predict the consequences of particle beam impacts on devices such as collimators, targets, and dumps. The quasi‐instantaneous beam impact raises complex dynamic phenomena which may be simulated resorting to implicit codes, for what concerns ...

Variable Load Demand Scheme for Hybrid AC/DC Nanogrid

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
This paper addresses the use of nanogrid technology in resolving the issue of blanket load shedding for domestic consumers. This is accomplished by using different load management techniques and load classification and utilizing maximum solar energy. The inclusion of DC‐based load in basic load and DC inverter load in regular load and scheduling of the
