Detection of pathogenic organisms in the environment presents several challenges due to the high cost and long times typically required for identification and quantification. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods are often hindered by the presence of polymerase inhibiting compounds and so direct methods of quantification that do not require ...

Chemical Raman Enhancement of Organic Adsorbates on Metal Surfaces [PDF]
Using a combination of first-principles theory and experiments, we provide a quantitative explanation for chemical contributions to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for a well-studied organic molecule, benzene thiol, chemisorbed on planar Au(111 ...

Development of spray-drying-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
We report a spray-drying method to fabricate silver nanoparticle (AgNP) aggregates for application in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). A custom-built system was used to fabricate AgNP aggregates of four sizes, 48, 86, 151, and 218 nm, from ...

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Dimensional Design for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a vibrational spectroscopy technique that enables specific identification of target analytes with sensitivity down to the single-molecule level by harnessing metal nanoparticles and nanostructures. Excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance of a nanostructured surface and the associated huge local ...

Microscale 3D Printed Pillars and Porous Polymeric Structures: Manufacturability and Micromechanics
This work demonstrates how two‐photon polymerization enables the fabrication of microscale solid and porous structures from IP‐Q, IP‐S, and IP‐PDMS resins. Combining morphological and mechanical characterization, the study provides the first systematic insights into IP‐Q mechanics and reveals how processing parameters affect structure and stiffness ...

Fullerene nanosheets for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
Most surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are based on noble metals or transition metal semiconductors. Developing nonmetallic SERS substrates is of great significance for expanding the application scope of SERS substrate materials.

Translation of Nanoantenna Hot-Spots by a Metal-Dielectric Composite Superlens [PDF]
We employ numerical simulations to show that highly localized, enhanced electromagnetic fields, also known as "hot spots," produced by a periodic array of silver nanoantennas can be spatially translated to the other side of a metal-dielectric composite ...

Surface Modification of Fluorine‐Free Superhydrophobic Materials with (Ultra‐)Thin TiO2 Layers
Significant changes in wettability, with a reduction of 60o in the water conduct angle, are reported via the surface modification of fluorine‐free superhydrophobic thin films, prepared by aerosol‐assisted chemical vapor deposition, after coating a 4 nm layer of titanium dioxide on the surface using atomic layer deposition.
