On the fluctuations of the surface brightness of galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1988We consider the problem of correlation between the surface brightnesses of two nearby points for an external galaxy under certain simplifying assumptions. A probability density function for these intensities are derived, as are its moments and correlation coefficient.

Properties of low Surface Brightness Galaxies
Symposium - International Astronomical Union, 1996We have been working on multiband surface photometry, spectrophotometry and Hi synthesis data for 20 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies. LSB galaxies are well described by disks with an average central surface brightness of ∼ 23.4B-mag arcsec–2. They have scale lengths typical for high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies, though a large range of sizes

Surface brightness of compact galaxies
Astronomische Nachrichten, 1978AbstractIn four fields near the north galactic pole diagrams of the relation between mean surface brightness and integral brightness of compact galaxies are constructed.

The surface brightness of IRAS galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1989Using IRAS measurements, we find positive correlations between both the infrared to optical flux ratio (L FIR/L B) and infrared colour temperature (L 60/L 100) with optical surface brightness. These correlations can be understood by high surface brightness galaxies having (i) a high star formation rate, or (ii) a high-space density of stars and dust ...

Future's bright for surface engineering
Materials World, 1998The National Surface Engineering Center (NASURF) commissioned a reappraisal of the study made in 1992 on `The UK Engineering Coatings Industry in 2005' to update the economic figures and market predictions. The new study, `2005 Revisited - The UK Surface Engineering Industry to 2010,' includes coatings used in areas other than corrosion and wear ...

Is there a Low Surface Brightness Universe?
International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1999AbstractI have been asked to review some of the arguments for and against the existence of a significant population of Hidden Galaxies, and to concentrate on the distant past and the possible future of this subject, leaving more recent observations to others.

A Study of 2MASS Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2002A study is being made of a sample of about 4,000 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies detected in the 2MASS all-sky near-infrared survey. These objects have similar central K-band surface brightnesses as optically selected LSBs. About 1,000 of them were observed in H i, and one third of these were detected.

MECHANISMS SUBSERVING SURFACE AND BORDER BRIGHTNESS CONTRAST
Optometry and Vision Science, 1973ABSTRACT The mechanisms involved include retinal interaction, adaptation at the level of the bipolars in the retina and eye movements. Adaptation at the bipolar layer introduces a non‐linear relation between the photoreceptor response and the ganglion cell response.
