On the fluctuations of the surface brightness of galaxies [PDF]

open access: possibleAstrophysics and Space Science, 1988
We consider the problem of correlation between the surface brightnesses of two nearby points for an external galaxy under certain simplifying assumptions. A probability density function for these intensities are derived, as are its moments and correlation coefficient.

An Update on the Hubble Constant from Surface Brightness Fluctuations

The surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method is a powerful way to measure distances to evolved galaxies without recent star formation. We have published a value of the Hubble constant using WFC3/IR to measure distances out to 100 Mpc, tied indirectly to a Cepheid calibration.
