Resolving Gamma-Ray Burst 000301C with a Gravitational Microlens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The afterglow of the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 000301C exhibited achromatic, short time-scale variability that is difficult to reconcile with the standard relativistic shock model.

A comparison of the planetary nebula luminosity function and surface brightness fluctuation distance scales

open access: yes, 1993
Two of the best techniques for measuring distances greater than ∼3 Mpc are the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) and the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method.

Targeting the MDM2‐MDM4 interaction interface reveals an otherwise therapeutically active wild‐type p53 in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates an alternative approach to reactivating the oncosuppressor p53 in cancer. A short peptide targeting the association of the two p53 inhibitors, MDM2 and MDM4, induces an otherwise therapeutically active p53 with unique features that promote cell death and potentially reduce toxicity towards proliferating nontumor cells.

Analytical and Monte Carlo results for the surface-brightness diameter relationship in supernova remnants [PDF]

open access: yespublished on Apj 746 , 56 (2012), 2012
The surface brightness diameter relationship for supernovae remnants (SNRs) is explained by adopting a model of direct conversion of the flux of kinetic energy into synchrotron luminosity. Two laws of motion are adopted, a power law model for the radius-time relationship, and a model which uses the thin layer approximation.

The atypical KRASQ22K mutation directs TGF‐β response towards partial epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in patient‐derived colorectal cancer tumoroids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TGF‐β has a complex role in cancer, exhibiting both tumor‐suppressive and tumor‐promoting properties. Using a series of differentiated tumoroids, derived from different stages and mutational background of colorectal cancer patients, we replicate this duality of TGF‐β in vitro. Notably, the atypical but highly aggressive KRASQ22K mutation rendered early‐

Surface Brightness Fluctuations

open access: yes
The Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) method is a powerful tool for determining distances to early-type galaxies. The method measures the intrinsic variance in a galaxy's surface brightness distribution to determine its distance with an accuracy of about 5%.

Time, the final frontier

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This article advocates integrating temporal dynamics into cancer research. Rather than relying on static snapshots, researchers should increasingly consider adopting dynamic methods—such as live imaging, temporal omics, and liquid biopsies—to track how tumors evolve over time.

Targeted protein degradation in oncology: novel therapeutic opportunity for solid tumours?

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Current anticancer therapies are limited by the occurrence of resistance and undruggability of most proteins. Targeted protein degraders are novel, promising agents that trigger the selective degradation of previously undruggable proteins through the recruitment of the ubiquitin–proteasome machinery. Their mechanism of action raises exciting challenges,

First Assessment of SDGSAT-1 TIS Thermal Infrared Bands Calibration Using Landsat 9 TIRS-2

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
SDGSAT-1, the inaugural Earth science satellite commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully lifted off from China's Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center on 5 November 2021. Cross calibration has emerged as an indispensable methodology,

Loss of proton‐sensing GPR4 reduces tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
G protein‐coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is a pH‐sensing receptor activated by acidic pH. GPR4 expression is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer. In mouse models, loss of GPR4 attenuated tumor progression. This correlated with increased IL2 and natural killer cell activity.
