Cardiopulmonary bypass with a surface-heparinized extracorporeal perfusion system.

ASAIO transactions, 1991
To evaluate the effect of surface heparinization on platelet consumption during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) ten pigs were placed on CPB for 3 hours. All pigs were injected with autologous Indium-111 labeled platelets (300-420 uCi) 24 hours prior to CPB and were systemically heparinized prior to cannulation for CPB.

Surface Modified Cardiopulmonary Bypass Circuits: Modifying the Inflammatory Response

Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2002
As a consequence of an aging population demographic, now more than ever, researchers in cardiac surgery must focus on means to improve the methods and technologies related to cardiopulmonary bypass. This review presents a classification of the currently available options for biomaterial modification for cardiopulmonary bypass circuits.

Effect of surface coating on platelet count drop during cardiopulmonary bypass

Perfusion, 1999
This study was designed to investigate the effect of surface coating on platelet count drop during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Sixty patients undergoing open-heart surgery were randomly divided into three groups each receiving a different type of coated hollow-fiber membrane oxygenator.

Towards navigation on the heart surface during coronary arterty bypass grafting

International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, 2008
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the standard treatment for advanced coronary artery diseases. In a preoperative MSCT, both wall plaque formations and resulting optimal anastomotic site are visible to the surgeon. During surgery, the identification of this position on the surface of the heart is of utmost importance for an effective ...

Cardiopulmonary Bypass Circuit Treated With Surface-Modifying Additives: A Clinical Evaluation of Blood Compatibility

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1998
The cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit induces blood activation and a systemic inflammatory response in cardiac surgical patients. The CPB circuit treated with surface-modifying additive (SMA) has been found to reduce blood activation by in vitro and ex vivo experiments.

Use of heparin-bonded surfaces in cardiopulmonary bypass

Perfusion, 1993
Heparin surface coating is a convenient means of improving the thrombo resistance of blood-exposed surfaces. At this time, heparin can be bonded to oxygenator/heat-exchanger structures, soft venous reservoirs, cardiotomy reservoirs, centrifugal pump heads, tubings, and cannulae.

Realization of FDDI optical bypass switches using surface micromachining technology

SPIE Proceedings, 1995
We report a novel fiber data distribution interface (FDDI) optical bypass switch using the surface-micromachining technology. In this design, all of the switches' components are made of polysilicon films and are monolithically patterned. The switch consists of four multimode optical fibers and a two-sided mirror sitting vertically on the top of a ...

Do surface modifying additives (SMA) influence blood loss and thrombogenicity in conventional cardiopulmonary bypass for coronary artery bypass grafting?

Cardiovascular Surgery, 2003
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) leads to activation of the coagulation and fibrinolytic cascades, partially associated with foreign surface contact. Hemorrhage and the need for blood products is associated with rising cost and increased risk of infection.

Glucocorticoids Blunt Neutrophil CD11b Surface Glycoprotein Upregulation During Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Humans

Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1994
Neutrophil-endothelial adhesion is the initiating event in neutrophil migration to areas of infection or injury. The binding of neutrophils to endothelium depends upon adhesive glycoproteins, of which the CD11/CD18 glycoproteins are the most important.
