Charged Surfaces and Interfacial Ions

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2000
Interfacial charge in a solid/liquid system is due to interactions of ions with surface sites affected by the electrostatic potential that is a consequence of their accumulation. The present theoretical approach is based on the so-called Surface Complexation Model that has several modifications known as either the 1-pK, the 2-pK, or the "MUSIC" model ...

Surface Charge Density

2015
The surface charge density of a membrane is the total electric charge per unit of membrane surface area. When a membrane surface is put in contact with a fluid containing charged species, several chemical interactions take place such as acid/ base dissociation, ionization of functional groups, adsorption of ions on the membrane surface, and/or the ...

Membrane Surface Charge

1984
Publisher Summary Lipids and proteins contain groups that are charged at the appropriate pH. Many biological membranes possess surface charges due to the presence of these lipids and proteins. There is experimental evidence for a surface charge present on both the outer and inner surfaces of the squid giant axon membrane. This chapter illustrates the

Surface charge and asbestos toxicity

Nature, 1977
ASBESTOS is a serious occupational and environmental hazard because of its fibrogenic and carcinogenic actions on the lung. Asbestos fibres exist in various physical forms, all of which are toxic. It is not known, however, which form is the most hazardous or which fibre property is the most important for inducing the toxic effects. It is thus important

Charge Accumulation at InAs Surfaces

Physical Review Letters, 1996
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to directly prove the existence of a charge accumulation layer at clean InAs surfaces. The formation of an accumulation layer is shown to be a common property of polar InAs surfaces, with the precise surface Fermi level position above the conduction band minimum determined by the surface geometry.

Thermoelectroconvection near charge-selective surfaces

Physical Review E, 2015
A new kind of instability caused by Joule heating near charge-selective surfaces (permselective membranes, electrodes, or systems of micro- and nanochannels) is investigated theoretically using a model based on the Rubinstein-Zaltzman approach. A simple relation is derived for the marginal stability curves: Joule heating can either destabilize or ...

Surface Charge Properties of Kaolinite

Clays and Clay Minerals, 1996
AbstractThe surface charge components of 2 Georgia kaolinites of differing degrees of crystallinity (KGa-1 and KGa-2) were determined using procedures based on charge balance concepts. Permanent structural charge density (σ0) was determined by measuring the surface excess of Cs, which is highly selective to permanent charge sites.

Surface Charge Relaxation during Coagulation

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1993
Abstract Transient deviations from the equilibrium surface charge density during the interaction of colloidal particles have been studied. Such deviations cause the process of particle encounter to become a non-first-order Markov process, complicating the analysis of colloid stability.

The influence of discrete surface charges on the force between charged surfaces

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2005
The force between two parallel charged flat surfaces, with discrete surface charges, has been calculated with Monte Carlo simulations for different values of the electrostatic coupling. For low electrostatic coupling (small counterion valence, small surface charge, high dielectric constant, and high temperature) the total force is dominated by the ...

Anisotropic Surface Charging of Chlorite Surfaces

Clays and Clay Minerals, 2013
AbstractChlorite is a layered silicate mineral group of importance in geology, agriculture, and in the processing of mineral resources. A more detailed analysis of the surface charge of chlorite minerals is important in order to improve our fundamental understanding of such particle structures and their behavior in suspension.
