Sparse Approximation of Currents for Statistics on Curves and Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Computing, processing, visualizing statistics on shapes like curves or surfaces is a real challenge with many applications ranging from medical image analysis to computational geometry. Modelling such geometrical primitives with currents avoids feature-based approach as well as point-correspondence method.

Estimating Ocean Vector Winds and Currents Using a Ka-Band Pencil-Beam Doppler Scatterometer

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2018
Ocean surface currents and winds are tightly coupled essential climate variables, and, given their short time scales, observing them at the same time and resolution is of great interest.

Stability and energy of low current surface discharges on wet surfaces

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2012
Low current discharges are of concern in the context of predicting the lifetime of outdoor polymeric insulators. The nature of ac surface discharges changes markedly between peak currents of 0.5 mA and 10 mA: the electrical characteristics typically changing from unstable to stable behavior when the peak current increases above 1 mA.

Synthesis of Surface H-Polarized Currents on an Unclosed Cylindrical Surface

open access: yesBulletin of the South Ural State University. Series "Mathematical Modelling, Programming and Computer Software", 2019
The article describes the inverse problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves, finding surface H-polarized currents on an unclosed cylindrical surface according to a given radiation pattern. The work is based on modelling an operator equation with a small parameter.

Error Quantification of Gaussian Process Regression for Extracting Eulerian Velocity Fields from Ocean Drifters

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Drifter observations can provide high-resolution surface velocity data (Lagrangian data), commonly used to reconstruct Eulerian velocity fields. Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), a machine learning method based on Gaussian probability distributions, has

Validating HF Radar Current Accuracy via Lagrangian Measurements and Radar-to-Radar Comparisons in Highly Variable Surface Currents

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The validation of HF radar systems remains an area with significant scope for advancement, particularly in terms of linking data quality with system operational parameters, fully utilizing the potential of redundant data (e.g., overlapping radial ...

The Winds and Currents Mission Concept

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The Winds and Currents Mission (WaCM) is a proposed approach to meet the need identified by the NRC Decadal Survey for the simultaneous measurements of ocean vector winds and currents. WaCM features a Ka-band pencil-beam Doppler scatterometer able to map

Deep Learning Improves Global Satellite Observations of Ocean Eddy Dynamics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Ocean eddies affect large‐scale circulation and induce a kinetic energy cascade through their non‐linear interactions. However, since global observations of eddy dynamics come from satellite altimetry maps that smooth eddies and distort their geometry ...
