Surface effects on anti-plane shear waves propagating in magneto-electro-elastic nanoplates [PDF]
Material surfaces may have a remarkable effect on the mechanical behavior of magneto-electro-elastic (or multiferroic) structures at nanoscale. In this paper, a surface magneto-electro-elasticity theory (or effective boundary condition formulation ...

Reducing the Discrepancy Between ASTER and MODIS Land Surface Temperature Products
Human-induced global warming has significantly increased the importance ofsatellite monitoring of land surface temperature (LST) on a global scale. The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides a 1-km resolution LST productwith ...

The domain of parabolicity for the Muskat problem
We address the well-posedness of the Muskat problem in a periodic geometry and in a setting which allows us to consider general initial and boundary data, gravity effects, as well as surface tension effects.

Surface Curvature Effects on Reflectance from Translucent Materials [PDF]
Most of the physically based techniques for rendering translucent objects use the diffusion theory of light scattering in turbid media. The widely used dipole diffusion model (Jensen et al.

Effects of Surface Transition and Adsorption on Ionic Liquid Capacitors [PDF]
Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are synthetic electrolytes with electrochemical stability superior to that of conventional aqueous-based electrolytes, allowing a significantly enlarged electrochemical window for application as capacitors.

Surface effects in maghemite nanoparticles
A consistent model is presented for the variation of saturation magnetization with particle size in maghemite nanoparticles, based on the existence of a magnetically disordered layer with a constant thickness of 1 nm. For particles smaller than 3 nm, layer thickness increases rapidly, and MS is already zero for 2.5 nm particle size.

Visual Distortions Near a Neutron Star and Black Hole
The visual distortion effects visible to an observer traveling around and descending to the surface of an extremely compact star are described. Specifically, trips to a ``normal" neutron star, a black hole, and an ultracompact neutron star with extremely
